C’mon Australia: Vote to end the Occupation, Recognise Palestine!

UN Security Council resolutions

During 1967 war, when Israel begun its military occupation of the Palestinian territories (West Bank including East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.  In condemning these actions the UN Security Council carried two separate resolutions (242 and 338) calling for Israel to withdraw from these lands.

Forty seven years later Isreal still refuses to comply.

In September 2014 in the face of collapsed peace negotiations and Israel’s massive settlement expansion announcements, the Palestinian Prime Minister announced that they would go to the UN Security Council to seek an end date to the Israeli occupation of Palestine.

This move was possible due to the Palestine being granted non-member Observer State status by the UN General Assembly in 2012.

There appear to be a number of different parties working on draft resolutions – including the Arab League and European member states.

Australia is a member of the UN Security Council until December 2014 and therefore has a particular obligation to take a leadership role in supporting these resolutions.

While it is unclear when the resolution will be voted upon, Jordan has expressed a desire for a vote to be taken before Christmas.
