Sanction Israel Now.
I am writing to demand that the Australian Government impose immediate sanctions on Israel for its ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza. Israel’s unrelenting war crimes, including systematic bombings, mass starvation, and the deliberate destruction of essential infrastructure, have claimed the lives of an estimated 186,000 Palestinians. The Australian Government’s refusal to sanction Israel in the face of these atrocities is a gross failure of moral responsibility and reveals a shocking complicity in this genocide. Arrest warrants have now been issued by the International Criminal Court for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant for the war crime of starvation and other crimes against humanity. Israel's culpability can no longer be questioned, and Australia can no longer neglect its obligations to sanction and prevent genocide. The Australian Government’s recent decision to impose sanctions on Iranian individuals, while ignoring the Israel’s genocidal project in Gaza, its apartheid and illegal occupation across Palestine and its invasion and terrorism in Lebanon, demonstrates a blatant and indefensible double standard. It is a stark display of racist bias in Australian foreign policy, shielding Israel from accountability while it annihilates an entire population. On Tuesday 29 October, Israel announced a total ban on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from operating in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. UNRWA has long been the only lifeline for millions of Palestinian refugees under total bombardment and siege, providing food, medical care, and shelter amidst an illegal blockade that has strangled Gaza’s resources for years. By legislating to ban UNRWA, Israel is turning genocidal policy into national law. The prohibition also openly defies the International Court of Justice’s March 2024 directive ordering Israel to cooperate with the UN to deliver essential humanitarian aid, an order Israel has blatantly disregarded during the past 12 months in its mission to cut off Gaza from survival. These actions reveal Israel’s contempt for the international community and its determination to eradicate Palestinians by targeting the very structures designed to protect and support them. Australia’s continued refusal to impose sanctions on Israel, even as it engages in reckless and destabilising actions in Lebanon and Syria, becomes the subject of ICC arrest warrants, and undermines international institutions like UNRWA and the UN, makes a mockery of the government's supposed commitment to human rights and international law. It also sends a clear and disturbing message that Palestinian and Arab lives are viewed as expendable, unworthy of the same protections afforded to others. It is imperative that Australia takes immediate and decisive action by undertaking the following actions: 1. Publicly, clearly vow support and co-operation with the International Criminal Court arrests process and procedures, and commit to accomodating arrests if the opportunity occurs within Australian jurisdiction. 2. Implement sanctions upon Israeli individuals and officials for the genocide in Gaza, the illegal occupation of Palestinian land, and its apartheid regime. 3. Commit to supporting any expulsion process or diplomatic sanctions undertaken toward Israel via international institutions like the United Nations. I also call on the Australian Government to put an end to the racist double standards that have allowed Israel’s decades of war crimes and violations of international law to go unchecked. The time for excuses is over. The world is watching, and it is past time that Australia lived up to its obligations under international law.
