For almost three years, Palestinians in Gaza have endured mass killing, displacement, starvation and the destruction of homes, hospitals and essential infrastructure. Across the occupied West Bank, violence and illegal settlement expansion continue unchecked.
When more than 400 international activists, including eleven Australians, joined the Global Sumud Flotilla to challenge Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid, many returned with disturbing testimonies of violence and abuse.
This violence was enabled because of the failure of the Australian government to act and hold Israel to account for its years of impunity.
Australian activist Violet Coco said: “Those monsters took pleasure in beating me, in sexually assaulting me and my friends... they do much worse to Palestinian prisoners.”
Isla Lamont described: “We were taken to this makeshift prison cargo ship. That's where the violence really began... Some came out unable to walk with broken bones, welts from being beaten by guns.”
Gemma O’Toole said: “People were shot with rubber bullets, people were shot with water cannons, people were beaten profusely.”
Zack Schofield recalled: “I saw an Israeli soldier point out a man who appeared Arab... we could hear his screams.”
The treatment of flotilla participants offers a glimpse into the violence and torture Palestinians have endured for decades.
Yet Australia continues to maintain military, economic and diplomatic ties with Israel.
Australia has imposed more than 1,400 sanctions on Russia for violations of international law. It is time to end the double standard.
Write to your MP today and demand Australia sanction those responsible for war crimes and illegal settlements, end military ties and stop Australia's complicity.
