Yet, the Australian Government still maintains military, trade and diplomatic ties with Israel — offering political cover for an apartheid regime that continues to violate international law with impunity.

Australia has imposed more than 1,400 sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. It is past time to apply the same standard to Israel’s ongoing atrocities in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories.

Since October 2023, Israel’s assault on Gaza has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and displaced millions. Even after the declaration of a ceasefire in October 2025, Israeli forces have continued to breach it through ongoing attacks, the blockade of aid, and the expansion of illegal settlements.

These are not isolated acts — they are part of a sustained campaign of occupation, apartheid and collective punishment.

Australia cannot claim to support human rights and international law while continuing to trade with, arm and diplomatically protect a state committing ongoing war crimes. Under the Genocide Convention, Apartheid Convention and International Court of Justice rulings, Australia has a binding obligation to prevent and punish such crimes.

Recent polling by YouGov (October 2025, sample of 1,501 Australians) shows that a clear majority of the public recognises the gravity of Israel’s actions and supports stronger measures: 58% agree there is a genocide happening in Gaza, 57% believe Australia should impose sanctions on Israel similar to those applied to Russia, and 58% support ending all arms trade and agreements with Israel. The Australian people are ahead of their government — it’s time their representatives caught up. Imposing sanctions would be a concrete action to back up the Government’s recognition of Palestine. It would demonstrate that recognition carries real accountability.

Sanctions are not a radical demand — they are the baseline international law response to genocide and apartheid. Australia has imposed more than 1,400 sanctions on Russia for its illegal invasion of Ukraine, yet continues to grant Israel impunity for its atrocities. This is hypocrisy — and complicity.

I call on you to demand that the Australian Government:

- Impose immediate country-level sanctions and a two-way arms embargo on Israel
- Sever economic and military ties with Israel, and
- Support international legal accountability for Israel’s war crimes, including at the International Criminal Court.

Australia must act consistently and courageously — not selectively — in upholding international law. The world is watching.

It’s time to stand on the right side of history: Sanction Israel. End complicity. Support justice for Palestine.
