Israel’s livestreamed genocide in Gaza and induced starvation of Palestinians has reached breaking point.

Israeli Occupation Forces have killed more than 61,000 Palestinians during the past 19 months, and has imposed a series of blockades on Gaza – the current lasting more than 80 days – causing acute malnutrition that Medecins du Monde has described as comparable to that seen in countries experiencing humanitarian crises spanning decades.

Australia has failed to meet its legal obligations under international law, including the Genocide Convention and Apartheid Convention. It is required not only to refrain from committing genocide, but also to prevent and punish. This duty was immediate and binding from the moment of the International Court of Justice’s historic ruling in January 2024.

Following an ICJ Advisory Opinion in July 2024, UN human rights experts said that states must, at a bare minimum, “cancel or suspend economic relationships, trade agreements and academic relations with Israel that may contribute to its unlawful presence and apartheid regime in the occupied Palestinian territory,” and impose a full arms embargo on Israel.”

Australia continues to export weapons and components that Israel’s forces use against Palestinians, in both Gaza and the illegally occupied West Bank. Australia maintains contractual and investment ties, via its Future Fund, with companies implicated in Israel’s illegal occupation, apartheid and genocide. And just recently the Foreign Minister refused to commit to sanctions that even our closest allies, the UK, France and Canada are imposing, or considering imposing.

I call on you to demand that the Australian government:
- Imposes sanctions and a two-way arms embargo on Israel, 
- Severs economic ties with Israel,
- Supports international legal accountability for Israel, and 
- Supports domestic legal safeguards, such as the Red Lines Package of legislation, to ensure Australia does not aid or abet war crimes, illegal settlements and crimes against humanity.

Australia must respect its legally binding duty, instead of merely posturing, paying lip service, or, worse, staying complicit as Israel simultaneously exterminates Palestinians and obliterates the foundations of international law.
