The former Foreign Minister Bob Carr made sure the ALP position on Israeli settlements was clear - they are all illegal and their growth "undermines the prospects for peace".

However Mr Shorten's recent comments suggest the ALP is at risk of abandoning this position.

Contact Bill Shorten - all settlements are illegal

On the 30 March, Mr Shorten stated:

“We do acknowledge that some settlement activity in the West Bank is illegal under Israeli law and we encourage the Israeli authorities to act effectively with respect to this".

His comment suggests that it is only a handful of settlement outposts established since 2001 that are a problem.  Settlement building is currently soaring and Shorten's comments places the ALP well outside the international consensus that all settlement activity is illegal.

On April 3 the Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister, Tanya Plibersek is quoted in the Sydney Morning Herald stating that “Labor’s position remains the same… Clear Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade advice to Labor in government was that the settlements are not in line with international law”

While the statement released by Ms Plibersek is a relief, it is clear that there are moves within the ALP to weaken their policy – which is why we need your support in opposing any such change.
