The news coming from Gaza grows more horrifying by the day. Thousands of innocent men, women and children have been killed. Israeli bombs have flattened entire neighbourhoods and communities. Hospitals are struggling to cope with the endless influx of people with appalling injuries. Exhausted medical staff - themselves vulnerable to Israeli attack - are operating without electricity, fuel for their generators and the most basic of medical supplies.

A ceasefire is the only solution to this catastrophic violence. I’m writing to you today to urge you to call, in the strongest possible terms and with the greatest urgency, on the Australian Government to support an immediate ceasefire.

As I write, the death toll has climbed to more than 15,000 people. Those killed include more than 6,150 children and 4,000 women. At least 103 UN staff, 198 medical staff including paramedics and 46 journalists have been killed.

Almost one and a half million people are displaced, and 7,000 people - at least 4,700 of them children - are missing, presumed trapped under the rubble of their homes and neighbourhoods, with more than 50% of homes damaged.

While a temporary pause in the violence has allowed an increase to humanitarian aid entering Gaza, the volume of this aid still falls far short of the growing and complex needs of the people of Gaza. Aid groups have called for the immediate reopening of additional crossing points and the entry of commercial goods. Fuel remains in high demand, having only recently been allowed into this besieged enclave following Israeli restrictions on it since 7 October. Without adequate fuel, hospitals and humanitarian organisations remain hamstrung in their efforts to provide proper services to the thousands of injured and sick Palestinians seeking treatment.

The UN Secretary General on 27 November called once again for a “full humanitarian ceasefire, for the benefit of the people of Gaza, Israel and the wider region,” and it is time Australia joined this call.

The Australian Government must clearly condemn Israel’s gross and ongoing violations of international law - the collective punishment of the blockade and intentional starvation of the people of Gaza. It must be unequivocal in its condemnation of Israeli violations of international law, such as its targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, and use of banned white phosphorus.

The killing of innocent Gazans is not “Israeli self-defense.” It is an attack on a population that is held captive in what has been described as an “open-air prison”, that has come to resemble - to use the words of the UN - “a living hell.”

The attacks must stop. The siege must be lifted. The violence that has plagued the people of Gaza and Palestine for the past 75 years must cease. All efforts internationally must address the underlying causes of these atrocities and urgently end Israeli apartheid and settler-colonialism. Peace and freedom must reign for Palestine.

Please join me in condemning Israel’s attacks on the people of Gaza, and calling for an immediate ceasefire and the lifting of the siege of Gaza to protect the most basic of human rights – the right to live.
