Netanyahu – Israel's Prime Minister – is coming to Australia this month for an official visit at the invitation of our Foreign Minister!

Israel has just announced 6,000 new settlement houses, flaunting the recent UN resolution for them to stop, and the International Criminal Court is investigating them for war crimes.

Our elected representatives must not show any approval for these policies by participating in any events where he is attending.

Let your elected representatives know you expect them not to attend any function where Mr Netanyahu is a guest, and you'll be watching to see if they do ...

I write to ask you not to participate in any events that the Israeli Prime Minister is attending in his upcoming Australian visit.

Mr Netanyahu’s Government has been lauded as the most right wing in Israel’s history, and has consistently flouted international law and requests for them to work towards a just and lasting peace with Palestinians.

Israel’s aggressive settlement expansion into Palestinian areas is putting the two-State solution in jeopardy to the extent that in December the UN Security Council passed a resolution demanding Israel refrain from further expansion.  Israel’s response has been to further escalate the expansion, and in the last two weeks alone Prime Minister Netanyahu has made three announcements of major expansions.    Belligerence towards a UNSC resolution must be met with consequences.

There are many other serious concerns about human rights abuses by the Government that Mr Netanyahu leads.

The International Criminal Court is currently undertaking a preliminary examination whether Israel should face charges for war crimes committed during their 2014 military offensive on Gaza, as well as for their settlements.

The two-State solution is the explicit policy of Australian political parties, as with much of the world.  However on the eve of Israel’s 2015 elections, Prime Minister Netanyahu stated there would be no Palestinian State while he was Prime Minister.

This Government has also demolished a record number of Palestinian homes, re-introduced imprisonment without trial for children, and continued to keep Gaza under a crippling siege which is effecting every facet of life.

In her invitation to Mr Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Bishop indicates that Australia and Israel share many values.   But Israel’s current policies of blatant disregard for International law, its obstinate refusal to engage in any progress towards ending the Occupation, its territorial expansion and military’s mistreatment of Palestinians including minors is an offense to core human values.

Attending events where Mr Netanhyahu is speaking would amount to tacit support of their human rights abuses.

As your constituent I therefore ask you not to compromise your commitment to human rights and refrain from participating in any event where Mr Netanyahu will be in attendance.
